The Markets
Stocks closed mixed on Tuesday as defensive areas of the market received another boost amidst concern pertaining to the vaccination effort against the coronavirus given the halt of the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The S&P 500 Index closed higher by a third of one percent, led by technology and utilities, encompassing the high growth/defensive bets that tend to hold up well during periods of risk aversion. At the highs of the session, the benchmark reached the upper limit of the rising intermediate trading range that we have been highlighting in recent weeks/months. Volume continues to fade, suggesting that investor interest to participate in this market is waning. Momentum indicators are also showing signs of peaking with the MACD histogram rolling over. Trend channel support can be seen just beyond 3950, while proven support at the 50-day moving average (3929.48) is now 5.4% below Tuesday’s close.
Today, in our Market Outlook to subscribers, we discuss the following:
- The breakout to new highs in the Technology and Health Care sectors
- Consumer Prices in the US and what they say about the areas where consumer demand is strong
- Gold and Silver
