The Markets
Stocks drifted slightly lower on Thursday as markets took a breather with the S&P 500 Index just below the all-time high charted in February. The S&P 500 Index shed two-tenths of one percent, holding above its 5-day moving average. Energy and REITs were the laggards on the day, posting declines in excess of one percent, while communication services and technology were the lone gainers. For the most part, sector performance was rather flat and lacklustre, leaving this analyst with little to highlight. The volatility index was essentially unchanged around the recovery lows just above 20, marking the open gap that was charted at the start of the panic decline in February. Seasonally, volatility tends to rise through the month of August and into September as a lack of favourable fundamental catalysts and lower trading volumes tends to make investors jittery. Clearly, we are not seeing this seasonal pattern, yet.
Sentiment on Thursday, as gauged by the put-call ratio, ended bullish at 0.68.
