The Markets

Stocks traded higher on Thursday amidst renewed trade hopes as negotiations between the US and China resumed.  The S&P 500 Index closed higher by just over a third of one percent.  The benchmark continues to consolidate on either side of resistance around 2815.  Support around the rising 20-day moving average has been persistent in recent days.  An important technical event is about to be triggered on the large-cap index.  The 50-day moving average appears poised to move back above the 200-day moving average, a trigger that has become known as a golden cross.  While the bullish crossover is likely to receive much discussion in the media, its merit as a timing signal is less than desired.  Take, for example, an investor that merely buys the broad market based on a bullish crossover or sells based on a bearish crossover.  The recent sell signal was realized on December 7th at 2633.  The sale would have mitigated the impact of much of the December panic, but now the benchmark is around 200 points higher than where its was when the sell signal was triggered.  A similar shake-out was realized in 2015/2016 when the bearish crossover was triggered at 1987 and the subsequent buy signal was realized 100 points higher. What can be derived from the crossover, at least as it pertains to the 50-day moving average, is that intermediate momentum is trending higher, which is supportive of the two to six month seasonal equity market trades that we highlight.
